NYU accepts a record-breaking number of applicants to the class of 2027

Updated: May 2, 2023

NYU has reached its lowest acceptance rate, with the highest number of applicants ever.

New York University released offers of admission to the Class of 2027 on March 28. Offers of admission to NYU’s New York campus were made to 8% of applicants—a record.

Students were selected from nearly 120,000 applications for first-year admission (13% more than last year and another record-setting number of applications). The admitted class represents a median SAT score of 1540, although many did not submit test scores, according to Williams.

NYU ranked #4 in a survey asking students their dream college, according to The Princeton Review.

“This school has everything you can imagine. I can hang out in Central Park and also shop in Soho, while studying at university,” said NYU freshman Ella Netland. “I don’t think there is any other more desirable college around the country.”

The College of Arts and Sciences, Stern School of Business (7%), and the Rory Meyers College of Nursing offered admission to fewer than 5% of applicants, according to Jonathan Williams, Associate Vice President of NYU Undergraduate Admissions.

Next fall’s entering class of approximately 5,700 first-year students will be diverse: It is expected to have no racial or ethnic majority. Almost 26% identify as American Indian/Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Black/African American, or Hispanic. In the admitted class, 19% identify as first in their families to attend college, and 20% are Pell Grant recipients. Admitted students hail from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 86 countries. NYU meets the demonstrated financial need for entering first year students.

“NYU’s admitted class of 2027 reaffirms the University’s commitment to higher education access and our enduring position as a University that is ‘open to all, regardless of national origin, religious beliefs, or social background,’” said Williams.
