This is the second shooting with similar circumstances in a week.
A woman was shot and killed in Albany, New York, on April 15 after turning into the wrong driveway while looking for a friend's house, according to authorities.
Homeowner Kevin Monahan shot a car that mistakenly pulled into his driveway at 9:53 P.M. The 65-year-old man fired two shots from his porch, killing 20-year-old passenger Kaylin Gillis while the driver tried to turn the car around.
"There was clearly no threat from anyone in the vehicle," Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy said at a press conference on Monday. "There was no reason for Mr. Monahan to feel threatened."
After Monahan fired shots at the group, they drove into the rural town of Hebron for cell service to call 911. First responders administered first aid five miles away from the house and pronounced Gillis dead on scene.
Police officers responded to Monahan’s home.
“Monohan was uncooperative with the investigation and refused to exit his residence to speak with police,” Murphy said in a statement.
The shooting occurred just days after a Black teenager, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, was shot and wounded by white homeowners when he went to the wrong house to pick up his brothers in Missouri. While standing at the door, Yarl was shot by Andrew Lester, who told the police he thought the teen was trying to break in.
Although Gillis was white, she and Yarl share a similarity: Both homeowners shot after when allegedly threatened, according to authorities
Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder and was put in custody on Monday.
